Cape town Gangster Bupa 34Y Mapanya
Bupa 34Y Mapanya / Lumkile Sogoni (Member 26).Known as either Mapanya or Bupa, which is a Rastafarian term for father. Mapanya was incarcerated a number of times with the longest stretch being 11 years for armed robbery, that involved the theft of money and cocaine. Songoni grew up in the Cape Flats township of Gugulethu and was exposed to the Number from an early age. He grew up idolizing the 26s as his father ran an illegal pub which was frequented by many 26s. His own father spent time in prison and was made a 28.He explains the allure of joining the Number in prison saying, â Suddenly you have the power and people, even the prison warders treat you differently.⠝ Since leaving prison Mapanya has dedicated his life to getting the youth in his community off the streets and back into school and other gainful activities. He carries the respect of his community for his commitment to following the straight and narrow while giving back.
David Williams
David Williams "Faces" 54 Y / (Member 28) A well known character in the Cape Town city centre, the man they call Face spent more than half his life in prison for crimes ranging from theft to assault. A long time member of the 28s, Williams was incarcerated during the apartheid years. “The prisons in the apartheid years were also apart, the coloureds with the coloureds, the blacks with the blacks and the whites with the whites.”He remembers how the Number existed to fight injustice inside the prison system. “Now in the apartheid years we stabbed the officials, the white man. We did this to get them to hear our voices.”The respect that the Number has brought him is of paramount importance and he talks of how walking the streets of Cape Town many people will greet him with respect. “My name is respected because I poured a lot of blood for my name that I might be respected.”
