While growing up in the small town of Logan, West Virginia, there were ample opportunities for inspiration but few avenues for expression. Set against the looming Appalachian mountains, Logan, VA offered a staff ready to be filled by furiously scribbled notes. Matthew Mahon could often be found sprinting through the lush undergrowth of the 26 acres his family had owned for over 71 years. The town, located in the southern part of the state—less than one hour from Charleston—is home to a population of 1,630 people. In a town where young men become coal miners, mechanics or criminals, Matthew defied the odds and passed the small town test: he left. While living out of his car and working as a children’s birthday party clown, Matthew bought his first Nikon F2 SLR 35mm. From his first banal images of train tracks and old people’s hands, to his feature work with WIRED-UK, FORTUNE and People magazines, Matthew continues to prove his father wrong with his rise on the the photography food chain. He is a son, a brother, a friend, a soccer coach, a lover of pajamas, and strides towards living a more “glamourous” lifestyle, like P.Diddy or Morrissey.
