Mark Leong

Mark Leong is a fifth-generation American-Chinese from Sunnyvale, California. After graduating from Harvard University in 1988, he received a George Peabody Gardner Traveling Fellowship to take pictures in his ancestral homeland. He again visited China in 1992 as artist-in-residence at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, sponsored by the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Foundation.  In 1997, he began his current long-term period of work and residency in Asia.  In 2003, Leong joined the Redux Pictures photo agency.  His book China Obscura was published in 2004.  His documentary photographs have been featured in National Geographic, Fortune, The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, The New Yorker and Stern.  Advertisting and institutional clients include Siemens, Infiniti, Johnson & Johnson, Apple, and the World Health Organization.  His work has been recognized with awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Fifty Crows, the Overseas Press Club and the British Natural History Museum.
